Bike Cad Pro version 19.0 crashing

Hi Brent,

I've been using the Bike Cad pro program for the last 10 years upgrading to each new version as its been released. I downloaded the latest version of Bike Cad a few weeks ago and have been struggling with this edition randomly crashing or freezing and not responding.
I'm on an aging windows 10 pc 32 bit version with 4gb ram so it chugs along steadily but no previous versions have crashed like this.... any suggestions

Version 19 on an old machine

I'm sorry to hear about this. I have not heard any other reports of crashing. Do you think it is truly random, or are you doing a particular operation when these crashes take place? I'd like to get to the bottom of this, but regret I don't have any insights right now.

Version 19 hangs

I just installed and whenever I try to use a feature that needs access to my hard drive (open template, save as etc) it freezes.  I uninstalled and re-installed.  Open as Administrator etc. I have to use Task Manager to kill the app.  I'm using Windows 64bit versionon Win11.  All other buttons/features seem to work.

Hanging when saving

Thanks for letting me know about this. I'm also running the 64-bit version of Windows 11 and have had no such issues. There have been no changes that I am aware of that would explain this issue and I have not heard from anyone else with a similar problem.

Although you mentioned you uninstalled and re-installed the program, one thing that may not have changed during that process is the configuration directory. The configuration directory doesn't by default get deleted when you uninstall the program. The video at: bikecad.ca/removing_old_versions discusses how to fully remove prior versions. Although it may not take much longer just to completely uninstall again, the main thing I might suggest you try is simply deleting your current configuration folder which you can do without uninstalling the program. This folder should be found at: C:\Users\Your username\AppData\Local\BikeCAD Pro 19.0\app\BikeCAD_19.0_configuration. If you delete this folder, (or move it to a new location) the next time you launch BikeCAD, a new configuration folder will be extracted. Hopefully running everything with the default settings will run as smoothly as expected.

I'll be curious to know how you get along.

Still freezing

I watched that video and deleted all prior version folders (ie C:\Users\Your username\AppData\Local\BikeCAD Pro xx.x) including all sub folders and files. I then uninstalled using Windows uninstaller.  I noticed my machine hadn't installed a recent Windows Update so I installed that, restarted and re-installed BikeCAD.  Still the same problem.  I am able to open other bike templates but as soon as I click 'Save', it freezes.

Freezing when saving

I'm sorry to hear this. Obviously, I'd like you to be able to save locally, but I wonder if things would work any differently if you saved online as described at: bikecad.ca/opening_and_saving_online. In order to make this work, you need to input your key which will ultimately get stored in your properties.xml file in your configuration folder. I'm not sure if simply saving those settings in the Customize dialog box is another one of those things you can't do or not.

Another explanation might be interference from some anti-virus utility. Do you have anything like that running on your system?

It won't allow saving online.

It won't allow saving online.  In explorer, I can right click and select Open With, navigate to the app file and then the app opens but won't actually open the selected file.

I'll have to do some research on how to safelist apps.

Opening files

While a lot of programs will allow you to open files as you describe, BikeCAD does not. You must either select File >> Open design from BCAD file or drag and drop the file into the BikeCAD interface as described at: bikecad.ca/drag_and_drop.

Ok, I have been terminating

Ok, I have been terminating with Task Manager when the BikeCAD froze trying to open a file or even to close but I just left it run and it eventually opened the 'Open' dialog box. When I click the Up Folder, it has frozen again for more than 20 minutes so far.  I'll let it go to see if it ever navigates to the parent folder.

I have checked resources, plenty of HD space and 16gb ram running 64 bit. Anything that could be slowing it down so much?  Making changes to the bike/dimensions in the application are all as expected.

Thanks

File open dialog box

I'm sorry to hear about this. I have no idea what could be going on. If the File open dialog box is causing trouble, can you get things done any more smoothly using the drag and drop approach?

File Open Dialog

I' guessing you don't have a solution but thought I would update this in case it triggers a thought.

4 days later and I have an open file!  I was terminating when it froze but apparently it's not freezing, it's thinking.  Each click takes several hours to resolve when trying to access a new file, navigate folders, close the application etc. Operations within the application (changing dimensions or inputs) work as expected. Previous versions worked flawlessly.  Task manager says it's using 349MB of memory.  I'll post more as I learn more.

Drag and Drop Doesn't work

I get the little circle with a line across it when I try to drag and drop.

Drag and drop

Does this help at all?

Drag and Drop doesn't work.

I tried dropping into the main window with no dialog boxes open but still get that little red circle.
